Mentor, mentoring is an interesting and very popular word nowadays. For me, of course, more acceptable was once the translation of the word as mentor, mentoring. ⠀
Mentoring is a relationship in which an experienced or more knowledgeable person helps a less experienced or less knowledgeable person to learn certain competencies. The experience and knowledge about which the mentoring relationship is based may relate to specific professional topics or to a wide range of personal development issues. ⠀
Mentoring in coaching is nowadays a mandatory procedure for the certification of coaches in the International Coaching Federation (ICF) and other organizations.
It is one of the areas of training and a form of support for the professional development of coaches.
In the process of mentoring, a certified mentor-coach shares his/her knowledge, gives his/her mentee feedback on the manifestation of the 8 ICF coaching competencies in a session, suggests how they can be developed and strengthened, and helps minimize possible difficulties in working with clients. ⠀
So what is mentoring for:
- Facilitates professional growth and enhances the coachee’s skills;
- Helps to master the tools for productive work with clients;
- Expands the coachee’s behavioral potential, helping to quickly navigate through different situations;
- Teaches you to create your own methods and solutions;
- Facilitates the formation of an individual coaching style.
Who needs mentoring
- Professionals who have been trained in coaching but do not feel confident in their abilities;
- Coaches who want to professionalize their sessions;
- Those who plan to become certified by the International Coaching Federation and meet these standards.
Regular meetings help the coachee to get a mentor’s evaluation of his/her performance and to reflect on his/her additional practice.
